Jennifer Shares a Story of Light and Dice

Every day, I step into my role as a caregiver with an open heart, ready to meet each person where they are. One morning, I was assigned to a client who was living with dementia and feeling particularly frightened and angry.

As I walked through the door, I could feel her tension—her eyes darted around, searching for threats that weren’t there. I knelt beside her and spoke gently, softly reminding her of simpler times.

At first, she bristled, insisting I wasn’t welcome. But I stayed calm, offering my hand and letting her take it when she felt ready. To her surprise, I greeted her as if I were family—because in her world, that’s what helped her feel safe. Slowly, her shoulders relaxed, and a hint of recognition lit her eyes.

We began our morning routine: I checked her vital signs with a steady touch, helped her wash and dress, and shared quiet companionship as the sun streamed through the window. Then I pulled out our favorite “Ludo games,” a simple board game that mirrors life’s ups and downs in colorful squares.

As we moved our tokens across the board, each roll of the dice brought laughter and calm instead of fear.

In that small living room, amidst soft giggles and rolling dice, I was reminded why I love caregiving: it’s a journey of empathy and dedication, where companionship can turn fear into trust.

Moments like these—sunlit, tender, and full of connection—are why I feel honored every time I walk into someone’s home. Thank you for letting me share this glimpse into my heart.
